Digital Technology Farms

Farming is changing. New environmental schemes, tighter regulation and rapid advances in technology are reshaping how decisions are made on farm. RHIZA is built for this change.

Across Agrii iFarms and Technology Centres, we run digital and precision trials to test the tools and advice used by RHIZA. We also work with RHIZA customers to ground truth our technology on commercial farms, learning from every season, soil type and farming system.

What are digital technology farms?

Digital Technology Farms bring the ‘field of the future’ into use today. By combining data from innovative technologies, we support better crop management decisions across a wide range of cropping systems, all year round.

These farms allow us to develop, trial and demonstrate technology at true farm scale, comparing new approaches directly with ‘field of today’ practices. The focus is on technologies that are ready, or nearly ready, for on farm adoption across the UK.

The challenge ahead for UK farming

A series of insight reports have been designed to highlight the latest evidence and insight behind the challenges facing UK farm businesses.

This report sets out how current and emerging digital tools can support better decisions on farm – where they show practical value, where they reduce risk, and where further evidence is still required. Smart Connected Farms will look different across the UK.

Each will use digital tools and data in ways that fit the system, scale and practical priorities of the business.

What our team says...

Jonathan Trotter

Jonathan Trotter

Technology Trials Manager, Agrii

“The Digital Technology Farm (DTF) concept is significantly advancing our understanding of how new and innovative technologies can be applied across a range of farming systems. Agrii’s DTF network facilitates this by enabling on-farm testing and validation, a crucial step in developing and proving the value case of technology on farm. Ultimately the DTF network is paving the way for greater integration and commercial adoption of technologies within UK agricultural and horticultural industries.”

“Innovation is also a key theme for the RHIZA development team. Working closely with R&D and trialling new technologies on our DTF sites, as well as collaborating with Green Horizons, fruit and speciality crop teams, we are actively investigating other areas in which new Agtech innovations can bring faster and more informative insights to help drive management decisions and sustainability. A few areas on which we are focusing include supporting growers and advisors with environmental decisions, field and farm benchmarking, 3rd party integrations and predictive modelling using remote sensing. As with all new technologies, we need to have a clear understanding of the value these tools create for our customers.”

UK Digital Agronomy Development Manager

“The Digital Technology Farms are a testing ground to enable us to monitor the performance of a range of technologies in enhancing grower’s abilities to improve productivity, drive better sustainability and increase their profitability in food production. The marketplace is flooded with technology and digital applications and it’s our job to guide our growers to those that have been tried and tested in a farming environment.”
